«Strengthening actions in favor of nature to achieve the sustainable development goals ” was the theme of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly which opened, in virtual format, on February 22, 2021.
A Monegasque delegation led by Professor Alain Piquemal, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), participated in this meeting and in the preparatory work of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, which met on 15 and February 16.
As part of discussions conducted by videoconference, the Principality took part in the high-level dialogue, bringing together environment ministers and international figures, on the environmental dimension of sustainable development, and its impact on the construction of a resilient and inclusive world after the pandemic.
During his speech, Professor Piquemal discussed the measures taken by Monaco to ensure the preservation of biodiversity on its territory, the renaturation of the city and the reduction of plastic waste. This message, delivered to the representatives of more than 90 States, reaffirmed the commitment of HSH the Sovereign Prince and his Government to reconcile the economic development of the Principality and the protection of the planet.
The Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly will resume its session in February 2022, to address issues that could not be covered in virtual format.
